ÉLEVAGE BERNAD

🇵🇹 Purebred Lusitano / Pure Spanish Horse 🇪🇸

Founded in 2003, Élevage Bernad specializes in the production, development, and sale of carefully selected Iberian horses — PSL (Puro Sangue Lusitano) and PRE (Pura Raza Española).

The Bernad stud farm is located in south-west France, 60 km east of Toulouse, in Puybegon in the Tarn department (81), at the Haras de Bruguière.

All Bernad breeding horses are born and raised on the property in the most natural conditions, in herds, on 140 hectares of meadows and grasslands cultivated in sustainable agriculture.

Bernad Iberian Horse Breeding Farm

Of Portuguese and Spanish origin, the Bernad family settled in the Tarn region in 1950, and in 2003 began breeding Iberian horses — Puro Sangue Lusitano (PSL) and Pura Raza Española (PRE).Pascal Bernad is a professional breeder who trained and practiced for several years in Spain, in the province of Toledo in Castilla La Mancha, at the Yeguada Fernandez de la Vega.Pascal learned his trade as a breeder and breeder of Iberian horses from Virgilio de la Vega, his yegüero Jesús and equine veterinarian Consuelo Serres.Cathy Bernad is a professional rider, qualified riding instructor and competition rider.Pascal and Cathy Bernad’s choice is to build bloodlines that preserve the typicity, identity and style of each of the two breeds, while developing their natural qualities and predispositions to accompany the evolution and future of equestrian practices.Their aim is to obtain a homogeneous, typical herd that produces balanced horses combining strength and wisdom, suppleness and reactivity, good character and beautiful gaits that are comfortable, ample and rhythmic, in order to meet the expectations of riders, breeders and owners who are passionate about these two great breeds of horse.

PSL and PRE Iberian Horses From the Bernad Breeding Farm

Iberian horses from the Bernad breeding farm are produced, selected, born, raised, cared for and, if their purchasers so wish, broken in, boarded and worked at Bruguière, by Pascal and Cathy Bernad. These horses are sought after for their aptitude for dressage, leisure riding and trail riding, working equitation and doma vaquera, traditional academic riding, horse shows and breeding.

Purebred Lusitano (PSL)

Breed characteristics: the legacy of centuries of selecting a horse for mounted work in the “campo”, close to the herd and in bullfighting, the PSL stands out for its functionality, finesse and temperament that is both calm and responsive.Bernad breeding always pays close attention to morphology, and when selecting breeding stock it looks for lovely neckline, a good topline, a short, powerful loinset and a deep croup for propulsive power.Tinteira de Bruguière is the mare that helped develop Bernad’s line of Lusitano horses. She is the foundation mare, and all the PSL broodmares at Haras de Bruguière are her descendants.

Bernad Breeding is a member of the AFL (Association Française du Lusitanien).

Pure Spanish Horse (PRE)

Breed characteristics: from its ancient origins as a war horse, horse of triumphs and horse of kings, the PRE has retained the poise, control and emotional stability that perfectly express its beauty. In addition to the Spaniard’s distinctive silhouette and elevated gaits, Bernad breeding seeks forward projection in gaits and functionality essential for sport riding.Today, Trinidad de Bruguière is the filly that best reflects the Bernad breeding philosophy. She represents the future and fits in perfectly with the vision of Pure Spanish Horse breeding as we like it at Haras de Bruguière.

Bernad Breeding is a member of the AECE (French Association of Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders).

The Bruguière Stud Farm

Bernad’s breeding operation takes advantage of the stud farm’s size (140 ha), its relief and the different types of soil to organize a range of meadows with different energy values, ideally suited to the feeding and growth of the horses.

Horse Feeding: Grass, Equi-Pasture, and Forage

In addition to some forty hectares of natural grassland, the farm’s forage-growing land produces a wide variety of alfalfa, ryegrass and cocksfoot forage, in line with sustainable farming practices and to meet all the farm’s self-sufficiency requirements.

Whatever the season or the weather, our breeding operation is able to ensure the best and most suitable terrain for our horses, with the nature and condition of the soil conditioning their comfort.

Group Horse Breeding

This environment favors herd breeding, which corresponds most naturally to the horse’s primary needs, both physical and psychological.Breeding here means taking your time, not forcing nature, and nurturing the growth and well-being needed to produce a horse that feels good in body and mind, and that will be a good companion for life.

Around twenty boxes, eight (very) large paddocks, the arena (60×30), the riding arena (30×15), a mares’ room (8 to 12 broodmares) and the saddlery complete the facilities.
